Just enough

So, how's your quarantine going? Bored yet? I know I am. And Oh! The guilt. Whenever I call some specific people whom I'm not gonna name ,from my college, the first thing that they ask me is how much of the syllabus have I completed. The honest answer: I haven't. All my books are in Kolkata and studying from pdfs at home, when you have a sister to annoy 24/7, is impossible. I guess you guys are studying without any breaks right now and that's why you want to know how much I've studied.

Passing time at home is an uphill task and there are only so many hours when you'll find YouTube interesting. I'm not a rich enough guy to own Netflix, so there's that. I would read books if there were hard copies in my house because, again, PDFs.

So I desperately had to find a new hobby to pass the time because I had time. I started scouring through my phone to find apps that interest me and it was right then when my eyes fell on the app called stepsetgo. Uhh,I should clarify that this is not an advertisement and I haven't been sponsored by them.

I didn't even remember that I had this on my phone. Some friend, some day, had asked me to install it because he would've gotten 5 coins for referring me and I had downloaded it to appease him. The daily limit for coins is 20 and you need to walk approximately 17k steps to reach the limit. 17k steps being around 13kms for my height and weight. The second thing which attracted me about the app was the bazaar. If a person has about 8500 coins, he can get a BMX bike for free and if he has 15000 coins, he can get an iPhone XR for free.

"But Ashutosh, by the time you get enough coins for an iPhone, it will become outdated"
I know that. This is why I am aiming for the BMX bike. Vroom vroom bitches.

The people running this app are smart. They knew that Big Man in Delhi had called the lockdown and people needed something to do. So, they created challenges for the people using this app. Challenges which spread across 21 days. If you complete a challenge, you'll get an extra 5-8 coins. Also, if you can successfully finish all the challenges, you could win Amazon vouchers.

The challenge which I would like to talk about is the one which was due for yesterday. Oh, also, the challenges were named from A-G. A= Active, B= Body and so on. The one which commenced yesterday was D= Distance. The challenge was I had to complete 5kms in one hour. This particular challenge was a bit difficult. The highest I had done before yesterday was 4.6 Kms in one hour, so I had to manage to gain 400m which is not an easy task. Another observation was that 5kms equal to 6400 steps for me. An average person walks 6000 steps in one hour and if you know me, you would know that I'm not physically fit AT ALL.

I was so nervous about this challenge that I went up to my roof at 4:50 in the morning and that was my first mistake. Don't try walking in the dark when you're blind. I accepted the challenge at 4:51 am and started walking. I decided that the best way to keep track of my steps was to keep my screen open during the entire duration of the walk, so that I know exactly what I'm doing. At the 30 minute mark, I had covered about 2.67 Kms which was pretty good considering, well, you know, me. This is when things started going wrong.

As soon as I hit the 3km mark, my phone started acting up. My music stopped playing through my earphones all of a sudden and the screen didn't respond to my touch. You would think that this was a stupid thing to cry over but at that point, I needed nothing more than me phone to work and me app to show that I had completed those 5. I started shouting at my phone and at that point of time, there were uncles and aunties on the roofs of the surrounding buildings looking at a college going student, crying hysterically and shouting at his smart phone. Yup, this is my life now.

Anyway, so after 5 minutes, my phone started working again. Before, the app showed that my average was 5.24 kmph but now it was at 4.88 kmph. I was fubbernucked. At this point, I had to start brisk walking to bring the average up. My legs had never hurt me this much before yesterday. They felt like someone was ironing on my bare legs while Pushing needles up my foot. At 5:41 am, I was at 4kms. 10 minutes for 1km. On any given day, I would never make it but yesterday was not want given day. I literally started to jump on my roof and sure, I acknowledge that jumping from one end to the other was not the safest or smartest of decisions, but I had to do it if I had to get to 5kms.

The clock was ticking at a constant speed, I'm sure, but at that moment time seemed to run faster than it had ever before. The timer showed 1minute left when I was at 4.9 km and I was sure that I would fail miserably. I ran faster than I had ever ran before, even faster than when I was charging the ball while playing football.

The time up notification came at first and I wanted to kick the walls off the roof and the battery off my phone but then came another notification. "Challenge completed. 6 coins have been put in your wallet".

Awww Yesssssssssss!

Wait a second 5:49?? What the fu....

I guess I was wrong about everything. I feel betrayed. Guess that's why people on TV say that you can never trust a witness in a crime. They don't remember what they saw. Wow! I feel stupid right now.
